There are two distinct reasons for own voice issues. One of them is called the occlusion effect — an increase in loudness of the wearer’s own voice when the ear canal is blocked by a closed-fit hearing aid. The second reason for own voice issues is caused by the hearing aid’s output which creates an unnatural own voice perception.
With the advent of open fittings and the development of proprietary fitting formulas, many wearers complained less of voice perception and more about a lack of hearing performance, particularly in noise. This is because an open fitting allows ambient sounds into the ear canal which masks the processed sound delivered via the hearing aid. In addition, proprietary fitting formulas designed for first fit acceptance provided less gain to avoid own voice issues but ultimately reduced audibility.
In a recent study on own voice quality, Signia Nx delivered a 50% improvement in satisfaction compared to a leading competitor. Results showed that 86% were satisfied or very satisfied with Signia Nx with OVP™, as compared to best in class competitors (58%/37%). Furthermore, the competitor devices were fitted with open tips while Signia Nx achieved the superior result with closed fittings, which additionally increased audibility while effectively screening ambient sounds.
Signia Nx with OVP™ provides the first genuine solution to the own voice issue, outperforming competition and providing the freedom to choose the acoustic coupling which promotes superior performance in noise. It delivers leading first fit acceptance by combining uncompromised audibility with a natural sounding own voice.
